At GYWPride, we know how vital safe, dedicated support is for trans, non-binary, and gender-diverse people and their loved ones. That’s why we’re shining a light on Mermaids UK—a pioneering charity standing with young gender-diverse people (up to age 19) across the UK, and the families and professionals who care for them.
Who they are
Founded in 1995 by parents seeking better support for their gender-nonconforming children, Mermaids is a registered Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO No. 1160575). For over 30 years, they’ve worked to build a world where no young person faces isolation because of their gender identity.
Their core mission
Mermaids exists to:
- Combat isolation and boost self-esteem for young gender-diverse people
- Help families and professionals navigate education, health, and legal systems
- Deliver inclusive training and advocate for fair, compassionate policy
- Advance public understanding of gender diversity
How they show up for our community
Mermaids offers practical, life-affirming support when it’s needed most:
✅ Free, confidential support: Helpline 0808 801 0400 (Mon–Fri 13:00–20:30), webchat, email, and 24/7 text support (text MERMAIDS to 85258)
✅ Safe communities: Moderated online groups for young people (age-banded) and parent/carers, plus local meet-ups
✅ Empowering programmes: Residential gatherings, the MANGO youth advocacy initiative (for 16–19s), and specialist training for schools and healthcare teams
✅ Trusted resources: Clear guidance on gender dysphoria, safe practices like chest binding, harm reduction, and signposting to NHS care
Standing strong in a divided landscape
Like many equity-focused organisations, Mermaids operates in a highly polarised environment. They’ve faced public scrutiny and regulatory inquiries, alongside high-profile advocacy work—including challenging decisions that threaten community safety. Importantly, independent research confirms what we see every day: supportive, affirming environments drastically reduce mental health risks for young gender-diverse people.
How you can help
Mermaids is powered by donations, grants, and volunteer effort. Their work relies on community backing to keep helplines open, resources available, and advocacy strong.
